Who we are

HeatPumpWise is an independent tools-and-guides site. We are not a manufacturer or a single contractor, so our guidance isn't tied to selling you a particular brand. When you request quotes, we connect you with vetted local installers; that's how the site stays free.

Our sizing & cost methodology

Our calculators use transparent, standards-based rules of thumb:

  • Sizing estimates heating load from floor area, climate zone, insulation and ceiling height using BTU-per-square-foot factors consistent with US DOE and ENERGY STAR guidance, then converts to tons (12,000 BTU/hr = 1 ton).
  • Cost uses typical installed price ranges by system type, adjusted by regional cost indices and any state or utility rebates (the federal 25C/25D credits expired Dec 31, 2025).
  • Savings compares your home's estimated annual heating energy delivered by your current system versus a heat pump at a given HSPF, using your local fuel and electricity prices.
  • Balance point interpolates manufacturer AHRI capacity ratings (47°F and 17°F) against your home's heat-loss rate.
⚠️ Our honest limit: every calculator is a starting estimate, not a replacement for a contractor's Manual J load calculation, which accounts for windows, air-sealing, orientation and local design temperatures. We say so on every page.

Editorial standards (E-E-A-T)

  • Show the math. Every result lists its inputs and a breakdown so you can check it.
  • Cite authorities. Guides link to primary sources — US DOE, ENERGY STAR, the IRS and AHRI — not marketing pages.
  • Stay current. Pages carry a "last updated" date; we revise when programs (like tax credits) change.
  • No fabricated reviews. We don't post fake testimonials or pretend to be a licensed contractor.
  • Independence. Brand mentions are informational; we don't rank by who pays us.
